The AI4D Scholarship Program strengthens the next generation of AI leaders, academics, and innovators focused on responsible AI for sustainable development. Implemented by the African Centre for Technology Studies, the program supports Ph.D. scholarships and the Emerging Scholars Program, enhancing research capacity in AI across African public universities, particularly in low and lower-middle-income countries.

The initiative fosters high-quality, multidisciplinary research at the intersection of AI, machine learning, and the Sustainable Development Goals. It prioritizes diversity by increasing the representation of women and linguistic minorities in AI research and technology development, ensuring broader participation in shaping responsible AI innovations.

Now progressing into its second phase, the program will scale its impact by expanding scholarship opportunities, strengthening institutional research capacity, and deepening support for inclusive, cutting-edge AI development across Africa.
