About

CITADEL was established during the first phase of the AI4D Africa program to address critical gaps in AI research and application in French-speaking Africa. It provides a platform for researchers from Burkina Faso and the sub-region to engage in high-quality, interdisciplinary AI research tailored to Africa’s unique context.

The center focuses on enhancing basic AI research from an African perspective, contextualizing AI models for real-world applications, scaling up skills development (with attention to underrepresented groups, including women), and educating governments and civil society on AI risks and regulatory inadequacies. CITADEL also trains talent to meet the needs of local industries and research sectors.

In its next phase, CITADEL will consolidate its role as a regional hub for responsible AI, deepening its interdisciplinary research and expanding its efforts to develop practical AI solutions for sustainable development across French-speaking Africa.
